How Jake Bidwell compares with Rangel, John & Olsson. 18/19 full stats.

Swansea City have actually signed a footballer! Totally under the radar and a player who is already out of nappies! crazy times.

The arrival of Jake Bidwell offers competition at left back after the departure of Martin Olsson.

We take a look at his performance last season compared with Declan John, Olsson and his former teammate Angel Rangel. Bidwell played the most out of all the full backs, playing for QPR whenever available.

Defensively, he looks solid although it isn’t great to make more fouls per games than tackles and this could be an issue with the Swans frailties at set-pieces. His 4 assists last season is definitely impressive as is his average of 1 key pass per game.

The Swans will enjoy that creativity coming forward. What will be interesting to see is how he adapts his game to playing for the Swans in a possession style team. His 67.1% pass completion rate is significantly lower than Declan John, giving the ball away more than twice as often. His 1.8 long balls per game is also three times higher than his new Swansea team mate.

This would be a greater concern but for comparing him with Rangel. We know than Angel likes to play a short, possession type game as we have been accustomed to watching but at QPR his stats are similar to Bidwell, sending in 1.8 long balls per game and losing the ball 26.5% of the time.

Taking this in mind, it is clear that this was the tactics imposed on both of them and so I’d expect him to have far better possession figures in a Swans shirt… although cutting out the more elaborate passes would also likely see the key passes and assist figures drop.

Overall a solid signing who seems to fit the requirements for right now. A player at the top of their game, dare I say that it is the kind of signing which we made pre-Premier League?
